Mayor’s golden moment beckons golden era for beveridge

February 2009

The Mayor of Mitchell, Cr Bill Melbourne, today officially turned the first sod announcing the commencement of construction on the shire’s newest residential community, ‘Mandalay at Beveridge’.

The residential estate, by joint partners Urbex and Metricon Developments, will deliver a new era for the region bringing more than 2000 homes together with first class amenity and proposed onsite facilities.

Mandalay will also comprise an 18-hole golf course and clubhouse, a proposed primary school, vast parklands with scenic walking and bike paths, and more.

Set to be a lifestyle environment for approximately 6000 residents, Mandalay will form an extension to Lithgow Street and sit on the boundary of Patterson Road in Beveridge, and is easily accessible from the Hume Highway.

The golf course, designed by golfing legend Peter Thomson’s firm, Thomson Perrett, is already underway and will nestle effortlessly among the overall development plan and offer many residents attractive aspects from their homes.

Mayor Bill Melbourne highlighted the council’s support for the project this week by turning the first sod with a ‘golden shovel’ and reinforced the value of encouraging urban development throughout the shire.

He said the delivery of new housing developments would offer an exciting future to the region by bringing homes and services that attract new families and friends, eventually forming a strong community and breathing life into the shire.

“ Mandalay will eventually bring thousands of people to Beveridge, that together with the onsite amenity it will deliver, will ultimately provide a wonderful facility and thriving destination for the community at large,” Mr Melbourne said.

Mandalay development manager, Rod Binedell, was present at the sod turning ceremony and presented the mayor with a token of appreciation for the council’s role in helping deliver the project to Beveridge.

Mr Binedell said the project was timely and offered a perfect opportunity to revitalise the outlying areas of the council which are ideally placed at Melbourne’s outer limits.

“ The council’s cooperation and understanding of the need for new developments in the Shire of Mitchell, such as Mandalay, has ensured a smooth process in getting to this point.

“ Located a minutes drive from the Beveridge on-ramp to the Hume Highway, Mandalay is approximately 50 kilometres from the CBD, and will offer buyers a fresh alternative to other growth corridors,” Mr Binedell said.

“ With works now well underway we will quickly see this once sleepy town come alive with activity and develop into a wonderful place to live and grow.”

He said in light of the recent fires which heavily devastated much of the shire, it is even more important that Mandalay will deliver new homes to the region.

“ We, like so many others, have been shocked by the devastation of the recent fires and are now hoping we can deliver new home opportunities to people that have been touched by this tragedy.

“ Mandalay will play a central role in rebuilding this whole community and we are very honoured to be in the position to do so,” Mr Binedell said.
